Greek and Roman Mythology – Group 2

  • Oedipus – He was the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes was born with pierced feet, hence his name. After he grew older he went to back to his hometown people were mourning Laius death, Oedipus outwitted the sphinx, fulfilled his destiny by taking the thrown of Thebes and married his mother, Jocasta.
  • Antigone – She is the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. The name is described as “against men.”
  • The Trojan War – Helen is considered the most beautiful person on Earth. A prince from Troy, Paris, is said to have stolen her and taken her to Troy. Hector was one of Troy’s legendary soldiers. He was thought of as a god. Achilles was one of the city-states legendary soldiers. He had long blond hair. He was also thought of as a god. The Greek city-states got together to try to bring Helen back home. In battle, Achilles kills Hector. The war is said to have lasted 10 years. The Greek city-states withdraw their troops leading Troy to think they won. They leave a big wooden horse and the Trojans think it is a war trophy so they take it inside their heavily fortified walls. At night Greek soldiers who were hidden inside of it come out and open Troy’s gates. The Greek soldiers come back and take over Troy.
  • Midas – King of Pessinus ruled his kingdom fairly, when he met a Satyr he got one wish – to turn everything he touched to gold. Eventually, his whole palace was gold. He became sad and Dionysus felt pity and turned everything back; he was poorer but he was richer in the things that count.
  • Bacchus – The Roman god of wine and intoxication. He is equated with the Greek Dionysus.
  • Agamemnon – The general-in-chief of the Greeks. He was murdered by his wife’s paramour.
  • Orestes – Son of Agamemnon. His father was murdered in the Trojan War, so he went into battle to seek revenge.
  • Electra – Orestes’s sister. She saves his life by sending him away.
  • Leda and the Swan – Leda was raped by the god Zeus, who had assumed the form of a swan. It is wandered whether Leda caught up by the swan, assumed his knowledge as well as his power.
  • Pandora – She was the first woman on Earth. Zeus made Hephaestus create him daughter and he did so out of clay making Pandora.
  • Odysseus/Ulysses – He is King of Ithaca. Also, he fought for 10 years in the Trojan War.
